Oncology Legal is responsible for AZ`s oncology-related commercial and R&D risk management for the global teams and serves as the legal team for AstraZeneca`s oncology business in the United States. Kastenmayer joins Austin, Texas-based Aeglea after a year as general counsel for Viela Bio in Maryland, which was acquired by Horizon Therapeutics Plc in March. Previously, he was Global General Counsel at Covid-19 vaccine manufacturer AstraZeneca, where he worked for more than seven years. Mariam currently holds the position of Deputy General Counsel, BioPharmaceuticals in the Legal Department of AstraZeneca. In this role, she is responsible for leading the global legal team responsible for managing global litigation, including intellectual property litigation, research and development consulting, and global business strategies related to the company`s biopharmaceutical business.
Mariam leads members of the legal team based in the U.S. and Europe and is the lead legal representative and strategic advisor in several management teams, including as General Counsel in the U.S. The legal advisor will influence business decisions with high-quality legal advice and analysis. Strategic thinking and influencing skills are crucial because the position has a direct impact on business operations and important legal issues with significant reputational or financial value and risk. The Legal Advisor will be a proactive business partner with an understanding of internal and external trends and will be able to articulate legal considerations clearly and concisely to high-level stakeholders in a dynamic environment. Kastenmayer began his career as a patent attorney at Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner and later served as legal counsel at MedImmune. He has also been a member of the National Cancer Institute and the National Institutes of Health, according to his LinkedIn profile. Mariam joined AstraZeneca in 2005 and has held various positions in global legal and compliance roles, including Acting Vice President of Human Resources for the U.S. business.
Prior to joining AstraZeneca, Mariam worked in private practice and worked as a federal law clerk.
